New York Driving Record Point Reduction

In New York, your license can be suspended for having too many points from traffic tickets. If you rely on your automobile for work, school, or other important activities, you can't afford to let this happen.

Fortunately, for many drivers, there is a way to reduce traffic ticket points that can lead to a costly suspension. It's called defensive driving. You can sign up for your online defensive driving course with DTA. This course can reduce up to four (4) points on your driving record for tickets received within the previous 18 months, but it will not reduce points from before that time period.

How Many Points Will I Get for That Ticket, Officer?

Each traffic violation results in a certain number of points on your New York driving record. Here is a list of some of the points associated with more common offenses.

Failure to stop for a school bus	5
Following too closely (tailgating)	4
Inadequate brakes	4
Inadequate brakes (while driving employer's vehicle)	2
Failing to yield right-of-way	3
Violation involving traffic signal, stop sign, or yield sign	3
Railroad crossing violation	3
Improper passing or lane use	3
Safety restraint violation involving person under 16	3
Any other moving violation	2

How Can I Be Sure My Points Have Been Reduced?

In order to verify that the points have been reduced on your driving record, you will need to get a copy of your record. Visit the New York DMV website to request a copy of your driving record.

You will need to complete a "Request for Driver and / or Vehicle Record Information" (form MV-15), which can be picked up from any motor vehicle office location or downloaded from the the DMV internet office.
